DLA to PIP - Should I delay? was created by BlissC
I'm currently on DLA (which I've been on for around 15 years), and have an indefinite award of DLA. I've not yet had the switch letter to apply for PIP.

I've recently had my bathroom adapted and ramping put in to the front door so it's easier to get my wheelchair in and out of the house. I have a number of long-term conditions, and last year due to developing new symptoms I was also diagnosed with M.E. I don't agree with the M.E. diagnosis, and neither does my GP. I haven't told the DWP about the M.E. diagnosis - mainly because I thought it would probably trigger having to claim PIP, which I was trying to put off as long as possible - probably a mistake. I'm seeing a specialist at the end of the month though to get my symptoms re-assessed and have further tests.

I realise that I need to let the DWP know about the adaptations, but I'm wondering if I should hold off on contacting them until after I've seen the specialist and have a new diagnosis or a better idea of what's going on, and maybe don't have to mention the M.E. if I have a new diagnosis.

What do you think? Any feelings on this?

I'm not aware of any requirement for you to tell the DWP that you have made adaptions to your home.

As the "new" diagnosis, have your limitations changed as a result of you having this condition?

If they have improved then you must tell the DWP and should expect to be invited to claim PIP.

If they have not changed significantly then there you do not need to tell the DWP.

If they have deteriorated then I cannot tell you not to call the DWP but the first thing you need to consider is whether this would result in an increased award? if it does not then there is no value you in your contacting the DWP, if a higher award is likely then you should consider reporting a Change, but again it will result in an invitation to claim PIP.

You need to be aware that PIP has been designed to be much more difficult to receive an award for.
