Paid Permitted Work - payroll to freelance?

Hi there, I am currently on ESA doing PPW on payroll. However I have seen another job that comes in under the thresholds for PPW however you have to be freelance. It is only one day per week but it is perfect for me. I have no idea how to go freelance or how this will affect my benefits. Does anyone know what would happen if I were to get this job?

Many thanks in advance.

The first question is what group are you in for ESA? If you are in the Support Group then you can do PW indefinitely but if you are in the WRAG then you can only earn above the Lower Earning Limit for 52 weeks, the time starts on the first week that you earned above the LEL.

If your PW is not limited the doing this freelance work is no different from your current job, although if your payments will be variable you will need to agree this with the DWP in advance as it is important that you are never considered to have earned over the Higher Earning Limit, as this will result in your ESA claim being closed.

If the work is freelance, then it suggests that you will have to register as self-employed, I'm afraid this is not something that we can help with, but you should be able to get with doing this at your local bank.

I am in the support group and doing PPW work permanently with the support of my key worker. It's part of a programme to manage my disability. I've gone ahead and applied and should hear back.. It can be very hard to find PPW to fit your support needs and to come in under the thresholds, particularly if like me you have a mental health problem and don't want to disclose. But I encourage everyone not to give up and consider doing regular self-employed work if you can find it because often it is just a few hours a week whereas payroll work is often over 16h. I hope I get this job but if not I will keep looking because it does seem to be very helpful. I am lucky that I have a key worker and a support plan to make it clear that I am doing this to manage my condition, not because I am 'fit for work'. It is her job to find work for disabled people but in reality I found it and she agreed that it seemed like a good idea. I was in a payroll job for PPW but it was too stressful for me and triggered my PTSD, so I'm leaving and hopefully I can do this self-employed role instead. At my interview the other staff member said she is self-employed as well and can support me to get that sorted out. I feel pretty positive about it (although scared, obviously) so fingers crossed.
