I believe the call centre workers are poorly trained and I suspect their pay reflects this. They tend to make up an answer if they do not know something, rather than finding out what is actually the case.

It may be of little comfort but you are not alone in your experiences and it isn't personal (at least not usually). I've lost count of the number of posts on this forum where claimants have been misled, both deliberately and through uncaring incompetence. I am currently at the beginning of yet another battle with the DWP (MR stage for PIP). In the 6½ years since my health imploded leaving me financially dependent upon the state, the DWP has repeatedly got it wrong and, in the process, been far from averse to twisting beyond recognition statements made by me. Out of seven "first time" decisions following ATOS assessments and / or reviews, the DWP has got it wrong five times (2x ESA; 2x DLA; !x PIP). Four have been successfully challenged and the latest battle is the fifth.

I did smile at your experience that you used to need a modicum of honesty and a brain cell to work for "the government". It isn't in doubt that a few (and it is just a few) who are very good at their jobs. Sadly, in both my professional and personal experiences over many many years, the majority of officers working in benefits care not a jot about the quality of work and dishonesty has become all too common. Sadly, the recent PIP decision in my own case exemplifies both traits perfectly. So much so, I won't be too unhappy if it ends up at Tribunal.

Anyway, I know "conversation" is generally kept to a minimum on the forum (and understandably so) but at least you know it's not just you who is experiencing an ever increasing loss of integrity by those you deal with. I wish you well.

Mrs H,

I agree, but I truly believe it runs deeper even than that.

There must be some form of tacit agreement being permeated from higher up, even to heads of service, and from government.

The system itself is not fit for purpose, the original plan was probably reasonable, but it has morphed in to something extremely divisive, but they continue to try and defend and push forward when they should take a step back, and re think what they are trying to achieve.

Hi Lewis,

I'm not going to comment further as I will be in danger of taking this thread off into 'discussion' territory, which is not the purpose of this forum

Hi,

Will the fact that I volunteer for about 2 hours every 8 weeks give DWP any reason to look at my PIP or ESA awards.

I did write and inform the ESA and PIP offices of my intentions, but received no response, apart from the telephone compliance interview yesterday.

I have signed for evidence that they received notification but they seem to be pretending they were not aware of it.

The trigger was the HMRC telling DWP that I had been paid £250 over 8/9 months from the charity I volunteer for, which represented mileage allowance paid to me.

Regards

Your doing voluntary work should not in itself trigger an assessment but if you are clearly doing something that is at odds with your stated limitation in regard to your PIP or ESA claims then this might result in a reassessment.

For example; if you are claiming on the basis of Social Anxiety and your voluntary work has you serving in a shop then this would clearly be a contradiction.
