It depends on the benefits and whether they are leaving the country.

If they are leaving the country and they are receiving ESA then the maximum time they can be away for is four weeks any longer and there ESA claim will be closed. They may be able to make a rapid reclaim on their return/

For PIP and DLA the period is 13 weeks.

We recommend that they notify the DWP that they will be away, there's a form to fill in and they will need to notify the DWP when they return

Just to add, absence exceeding more than 4 weeks may also affect Housing Benefit entitlement and, subject to local scheme, Council Tax Reduction Scheme (aka Council Tax Support). Your friend will need to inform the local council AS WELL AS the various parts of the DWP.

It also depends on whether your friend is holidaying within or outside Great Britain. For clarity, GB doesn't include Northern Ireland in this context.
