What happens if someone does not attend a medical interview? Do they stop your claim and you have to start again or can you then go to appeal? Thank you.

Hi Ob,

The claimant is allowed to rearrange the assessment once without penalty. If a the claimant does not attend that second appointment , or misses the first without contacting the assessment provider, the usual routine is for the file to be returned to DWP and the case closed.

The claimant does have the right to show 'good cause' for not attending but what this is not clear cut and it can be difficult to get that decision overturned and the case re-opened.

Thanks. So from that point, would it be a case of the claimant going to appeals or having to start a new claim?

I should explain, I have a stress related MH illness and am at present in ESA SG (have never had an interview for that) and PIP enhanced care (from paper based assessment and paper based appeal- had a home visit in the past). I also had a home visit for IB in that past.

I'm worried about being called in for an interview in future and thinking if that happens I'm not going to do, it would be too stressful. So I just wanted to know what the result of that would be.

I'm probably over-thinking it and reassessment is a while off (next year for ESA SG and the following year for PIP).

Also I have a care plan which is dated 2015, would I be best to get this updated with the new date before the reassessments or would copies of my prescriptions suffice do you think (I get them 2-monthly). Thanks

You can either appeal the Good Cause not being accepted or make a new claim. You don't mention the benefit but if it is ESA then you would not be paid the Assessment Rate for the six months following the failure to attend.

It won't hurt to do so, but you need to consider how mush it attests to your problems with completing the PIP and ESA activities.
