Help for someone who has been overpaid

I successfully won my ESA appeal so have been helping a friend of a friend with their PIP appeal like lots of us on here end up doing. His mother contacted me last week to say he has been told by DWP he needs to pay back £12000 he has been overpaid in last 4 years for claiming Carers Allowance alongside getting SDA on his ESA. I have said I cannot help with this matter as no clue what to do - am thinking he needs legal advice??? I have googled on his behalf and come up with Turn2 Us was going to tell them to contact them to be put in touch with a legal adviser....is this the best to do, do you think?
Apparently he has taken the news extremely badly - severe mental health problems anyway and this has tipped him over the edge. I dont know the facts of the case regarding the claim and dont want to ask in case they think I can help - but I am thinking he needs to get legal advice possibly via the above organisation - any other advice I can give him please? Thank you

Tell them to do an internet search for "welfare advice" with their postcode, town or county. They need to speak to a trained advisor, so if they go to the CAB they need to speak to one of the main office advisors not one of those who provide a basic service in the front office.

Hi Gordon I passed the information onto the lady whose son has been overpaid and advised them to ring up and make some appointments with experts to help him so thanks again.

I have been helping them with submitting a PIP appeal - today she showed me the paperwork her son got from DWP saying they had been contacted by Tribunal services about appeal and they sent her all the letters etc but she doesnt seem to have heard from tribunal direct or her son rather. Is this normal - contact to be made from DWP only or should she have heard from Tribunal to say registered her claim? I advised her to ring Tribunal service and ask what the score is about the PIP appeal etc. When I had my ESA appeal I heard direct from Tribunal too? thanks

They should have heard from the Tribunal Service so as you have advised they need to contact them.

Hi Nick,

The appeal has obviously been accepted otherwise DWP would not have sent the paperwork. However, your friend should have heard from the Tribunal service.
