New PIP Claim/Possible Uni Attendance Conflict

Hi, I have been battling with Chronic Pain, Fatigue, Depression and Anxiety for over 12 months now, including even having a suspected stroke in December last year.

Stroke wise, was given the all clear luckily. However the result of all of the above meant being unable to work leading to my car being repossessed and being evicted from our home.

I put in a claim for PIP after being advised by a Professional, who I cant remember at the moment, and was rejected. I eventually put a MR in and lost and turned to the British Legion to help with the tribunal and for whatever reason nothing happened.

I am starting from scratch and reapplying due to worsening circumstances but in an attempt to try to get some positive things happening in my life I chose to try to go to Uni. My attendance is rubbish, averaging only once a week out of 3 days mainly as the full day Monday wipes me out for the rest of the week.

The University has been fantastic, they helped with DSA and I have a taxi account so I don't need to worry about driving and to try to help motivate me. I also have someone taking my notes for all lessons. I have a dictaphone for when I am there as well as the note taker. I have software that can transcribe the recordings for me, and also another piece of software that can scan any piece of paper and read it out load for me.

The support has been fantastic but will this attempt to heal myself go against me in my PIP application or can I use the report the University carried out as a bit of supporting evidence. It clearly explains my difficulty concentrating, writing , remembering, understanding etc and all the aids and assistance I require to function.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

It will obviously depend on the limitations to your daily activities that you have but I'm afraid that your attendance at university will likely count against you, at the very least you will need to explain in considerable detail how you manage to attend despite your limitations.

Have a look at the PIP Claim guide for details of the criteria you will need to meet for an award and an explanation of the claim process.

If you have further questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Hi Gordon,

Thank you for your reply. My attendance is quite poor at the moment, I am lucky to get there once a week out of three. The University and DSA have offered a lot of assistance, including someone to take my notes when I am not there, a dictaphone for when I am there, software to transcribe my recordings, and even another bit of software to turn written words into audio for me to listen back.

I also get use of a Taxi to and from as well.

It was my initial thought as well that it would go against me. Thank you again for your help.

Kind regards
