ESA APPOINTMENT was created by bassettsfarm
Hello All, I have my assessment for ESA tomorrow, and I'm dreading it. I get in such a panic, and it just makes me so ill. My question is - on my recent PIP assessment, I was awarded 10 points for Moving Around (I can stand and then move using an aid or appliance more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres). Doesn't that automatically apply to ESA, and Descriptor 1 of the Physical section, so putting me in the Support Group?
Thank you. Merry Christmas to everyone. Amanda

Hi Amanda,

The relevant ESA descriptor relates to 'mobility' not 'walking'. The assessor is allowed to decide that you can self-propel a manual wheelchair for the distance in question, which means that you would not score any points.

This applies even if you have never used, or been advised to use, a wheelchair.

If you cannot self-propel a wheelchair, for whatever reason, you need to make this clear to the assessor.

Other than this, what to expect from the assessment is explained in the ESA guide. I hope it goes well for you.

Good luck for your assessment Amanda. What a time of year to have one eh? But at least it will be over and done with in time for Christmas and you can spend it relaxing a little. Christmas wishes PP :)

Thank you Porthole and Mr H.

I thought of you, Porthole, and it helped keep me strong. The centre for my ESA assessment is within my local Job Centre, but they couldn't have put it in a further corner if they tried. I couldn't even make it all the way through the offices to get to the ESA reception, so I had to be given help. There were 3 other people in the waiting room, and all were called in before me. All of them came out after about 10-15 minutes maximum. I was called in, and the lady apologised for the delay, but said she had been reading through all of my notes. She asked lots and lots of questions, although didn't ask me to do any sort of physical test (the same thing happened at my PIP assessment). She then said, I'm so sorry this has taken so long - we've taken over an hour.

So, now just to wait for the results. Unsure whether or not being in there for so much longer than the other people is a good thing, but she certainly was thorough. Although I live in privately rented accommodation, after we went through everything, she advised me to stop off on my way out and collect information about being rehoused, as it would be much better for me to live in a more suitable house. So, she obviously understood the difficulties I have.

Happy New Year to everyone. I'll keep you posted of the outcome.

Hi Everyone,

Well, I received the dreaded brown envelope (following ESA reassessment on 23/12/16) and it was the very best possible news. I have been placed in the Support Group.

I can't thank this wonderful site and moderators enough. Before I had discovered you, I had to go to tribunal stage with both PIP and ESA, but since following your advice and guides, I have obviously expressed myself better in the forms and during the F2F interviews, as I have been awarded both PIP and ESA at rates I am happy with and truly believe I should be receiving.

Can I just ask two questions please?

1. How long does and ESA award last for?

2. Unlike on the PIP award letter, where there was an explanatory sheet of what the HP had found, there is no such notes on the ESA letter. Will I be sent something to explain which descriptors I met etc, or is that something I need to request myself?

Thank you again

A x

Hi Amanda,

That's great news! Thanks for letting us know :)

ESA is technically an indefinite award with no end date. However, there should be a 'prognosis' on your file and that is when you should expect to be reassessed (my guess would be a maximum of 3 years). You can find this out by phoning DWP. Ask for a copy of the assessor's report at the same time - it will be an ESA85 if you had a face2face appointment, ESA85a if you did not :)
