ESA for 20 year old student was created by niccikk
Hi, a separate post to my own PIP post as this concerns my daughter.

My 19 year old daughter received DLA which expires next year (a 5 year award). As she is more disabled now than she was at her last renewal, with a lot more medical input, I fully expect her to be transferred to PIP.

As she turns 20 in a couple of month I will obviously lose her elements in child benefit and child tax credit. I currently receive carers allowance for her. I am really confused over whether she can apply for ESA (well, as her appointee I would be applying) as she is a full time student. She is staying on at college for a foundation degree starting in Sep 17 - would she be eligible then or is it just her student loans etc?

Finally, if my PIP is reinstated and I get the SDP back, am I correct in thinking that if I stopped claiming carers allowance for my daughter then she could potentially claim SDP in her ESA (if she can claim that!) as although we don't live alone, because we each would receive SDP then that over rules that?

Hi niccikk,

Thanks for keeping questions regarding your claim and your daughter's in separate topics, that helps us enormously :)

Your daughter would be able to claim ESA (subject to meeting the other criteria) as long as she remains on DLA or PIP.
If she were in receipt of income related ESA she might be entitled to the SDP.

May I suggest that you bookmark/favourite this on your web browser now so that you can find it easily in future? This will allow you to return with further questions or comments relating to your daughter's ESA situation without having to start a new topic each time :)
