Hi looking for help. My son was finally diagnosed with autism just before he was 18 at CAHMS but they then has to sign him off due to him turning 18. He has a letter of diagnosis. He's had a council worker working with him for a year since then and he has mover forward really well. The council worker signed him up on universal credit. I'd kept him away from job centre as never had a good experience there. He was told he'd be signed up for PIP. He had had a awful time with job centre and UC. We have done a form for ESA but not heard back yet. The form was done August 2016.
He now is due an assessment from univsal credit and we have the form to fill in but so much of it isn't relevant to my son. He's worrier about assessment and so am I as I fear he won't get enough points. To me he needs maybe 2 more years of support and he'd be in a better position to be able to jump through job centre loops.
Out local Autism group didn't diagnose him so won't help him. Through national one takes.ages to get email replies too. Why help can I give him for the assessment?
We only have the one letter confirming his diagnosis he's not had to see doctor at our surgery for ASD and we have no help aside from council worker who has been pushing my son to sign up to work agencies etc and then saying his benefit may be cut. My son was signed off from doctor with sick notes last year due to stress of job centre but that was all and didn't see same doctor and the assessment say they do their own and don't pay attention to our doctor
Please what can I do

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

The primary question is whether he or you on his behalf need the money from UC or whether you can manage without it.

If you do, then UC is the only way that he will receive anything at this time and if you think that he is Unfit for Work then he needs to claim ESA under UC, unless he is in an area that UC is not fully live in yet in which case he needs to close his UC claim and then claim ESA.

I'm afraid that ESA will only be awarded if your son meets the criteria, they take no account of his being unable to work in the general sense.

I would start by having a look at our ESA Claim guides and if you have specific questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.
