Hi There,

I got the DLA is ending letter and I am not being transferred onto PIP automatically. I have been too ill to call up and say I want to claim PIP, and I managed to read the advice you gave about requesting a PIP1 form instead. My deadline for claiming PIP is today (18th Jan) but I only sent the letter to them on 12th Jan. I get panic attacks and illness as soon as I think about phoning them but am worried that I have left it too late to ask for the form. What should I do?

I have to warn you that every member that has tried to make a claim for PIP by requesting a paper PIP1 has had serious problems with the process.

Your claim will not be started until the DWP have a completed PIP1 available. If your claim has not been started by the required date then your DLA payments will be suspended and you will be given a further four weeks to start your claim.

My recommendation is to make the call if there is any way in which you can, or to get someone to make it on your behalf, you will need to be available to authorise the person to speak to the DWP but they can deal with the majority of the call.

If your claim is not started by the end of the second four week period then it will be assumed that you do not want to make a claim for PIP and your DLA claim will be closed.

Thank you Gordon, thank goodness I got your advice and managed to find the strength and courage to call up on the last day available before they would have suspended my claim. I will now take further support from CAB to fill in the 'How your disability affects you' form that arrived yesterday (25th Jan). The letter is dated 18th Jan (the same day I called to give them the PIP1 details over the phone). Are they allowed to give you less than 28days from the day you receive the letter? The letter has taken a week to reach me and that seems very unfair. Thanks for any further advice you can offer.

I'm afraid the time you have to complete the PIP2 includes postage time at both ends of the process for postage, if you are struggling to complete the form in the time given then you can ask for a two week extension, we haven't seen an initial request refused but you will need to ring then to make the request.
