Hi all,
I would be grateful for any help and suggestions regarding the memory, concentration and cognitive aspects of PIP.
I have had f2f and got copy of assessor report which states repeatedly that there was no difficulties with memory, concentration or any cognitive impairment. To my mind there was, even though it was a 'better' day because I had been resting for several days before it. Compared to how I used to be there most definitely has been a decline in this aspect.
I experience real issues with memory etc due to increase in pain, fatigue and as a side effect of medication. Even on a 'better' day I have noticed a decline in this functioning. Because I knew how much change I would get from £1 if something cost 75p, and could spell world backwards the assessor deems that I have no difficulties. I do not have a learning disability ( just difficulty learning new things) low IQ or dementia and feel such questions - in my case- are both patronising and irrelevant to my situation.
I am trying to explain in MR letter that it is pain, fatigue and meds that impact on memory, concentration and cognition. For majority of time I cannot read a book as just cannot take in any info for example. Fibro fog is the term given to cognitive problems with fibromyalgia, and I am considering attaching copy of NHS sheet which details the symptoms. I also have two sleep disorders and never have restorative sleep....there is a,lot of research regarding negative impact sleep deprivation can have on cognition etc.
Has anyone got experience of appealing against statement that no such difficulties were observed, or suggestions of how best to approach this?
I wish the dwp would not treat us as liars and idiots !

Although it should be possible that your conditions have an impact on your cognitive ability, it may not be enough for you to score points. You will need to show that you are effected on the majority of days but will also need to show that you are effected when you need to complete activities. For example you talk about reading a book, the DM may argue that it is only when you are required to read that it comes under the Descriptors, that you could read the book when not cognitively effected if you wished.
If you look at the definitions for reading
“Basic written information” means signs, symbols and dates written or printed standard size text in your native language.
“Complex written information” means more than one sentence of written or printed standard size text in your native language.
you will see that they set a high standard for the level of disablement, you also need to consider that the Reading activity is primarily aimed at claimants with sight problems.

Makes sense regarding reading, thank you.
