PIP AWARD was created by JJ
Dear Saviour,

I have been medically retired from work since 1996. At first I was put on Income Support & DLA, then ESA & DLA. I only ever had one Medical Practioner who came out from Gateshead just after I was retired to assess me until now.

I am now bedbound and have had two Spinal Fusions, which has made my spine brittle and it has 'severe wear & tear' for someone of my age. I suffer from Chronic Depression, CFS, FMS, Oesteporis. I have also tried to take an overdose.

I had my PIP's face to face in January, which I did pass both at the enhanced rate. The only query I have regarding the Question: Planning a route or journey.... as I am bedbound I cannot do this, even when I have to go to hosiptal I need someone to drive me there as I am wheelchair bound! My Husband is my full time Carer and he was present during the interview, we told the Gentleman all this information, yet my score for this was 0. Also the Question regarding my medication, I told him I could not put my tablets up for the day, as I can not stand to sort them, plus with 'Fibro Fog' I don't know what the names are. If they are different on the box to my script I don't know what tablet to put up. Plus since my attempted overdose and chronic depression my Husband does certainly not what me been in charge of my tablets, my score for this was 0. Do you think I should query these Answers/Score.

How does the scoring system work, if I got those questions with a higher score would I get more money?

Many thanks

JJ

There seems to be a lot of confusion over this activity at the moment. The Going Out activity looks at;

Planning a route - this is primarily a cognitive or sensory (e.g. blindness) activity, you are not being asked to follow the route, only to work it out. (c)

Undertaking a Journey - this is do with mental health issues such as agoraphobia and social anxiety and is concerned with you leaving the house to go somewhere. You need to show that you would suffer "overwhelming psychological distress" to meet the criteria. (b) and (e)

Following a route - the DWP regard this as a cognitive or sensory activity to do with navigating the route, to score for mental health issues you will need to show that your anxiety is so extreme that it would prevent you from actually navigating the route. (d) and (f).

As your problems are physical you should be looking to score points in the Moving Around activity.

I would go with the not being allowed access to your tablets because of the risk, I think it likely that a DM will simply say that you can sit down while sorting them out.

As you say you were awarded enhanced rates for both care and mobility, you would not get any more money even if you had scored more points.

Dear Gordon

Thank you for your reply.

When the Gentleman asked about me going out I told him I only went out when I had to i.e Doctors, Hospital, as I get so worked up days before hand that I am physically ill with sickness and diarrhoea. As I know I will have to sit for hours surrounded by people, especially at Hospitals. Sometimes when I am very depressed and we unexpectedly get 'guests' my Husband has to tell them I am asleep because I just cannot face seeing anyone even if they are family!

As to Planning a journey, we explained we have Nephew's who live 10 mile away and have done so for 20yrs but I cannot find my way there. I do not know my North from South and could not read a map at all especially with my 'Fibro Fog', it is bad enough to try and read a 'Newspaper Clip' and remember it. I just cannot do it and it is the same with the tablets when they keep changing the name on the box, to use the actual medical name and not the name on my prescription.

What I do not understand is that I was on the Middle Rate for Care and the Higher Rate for Mobility, as I said I was awarded the Enhanced Rate of PIP's for both but I am on the same about of money, we do not have any savings, my Husband is my Full Time Carer which we receive CA but how can this be?

I do wish to thank you & all your team for 'producing' this site because if I had not found it I really do not think I would be here after my saga of four years which did 'drive' me to take an overdose. All of which the Gentleman had copies of!

Many, many, thanks

The rates for PIP are the same as the ones for DLA so if your award has increased then you must be receiving more money!

Hi Gordon

Thank you, do you have a 'template' to help me query these two points, i.e - severe depression/anxiety and going from Middle Rate to Enhanced Rate.

Many thanks
