Taking Hearing Dog to PIP assessment

Hi, I would be most grateful for any advice taking my Hearing Dog to my PIP assessment.

I have read that an assessor dismissed a PIP claim on the basis that if someone has a Hearing Dog then they do not qualify for any points for the mobility descriptors as the dog can help them.

I have also read that someone was granted PIP because she had a hearing dog. I am completely confused as to whether I will be penalised for having a Hearing Dog or whether it could help my claim.

If anybody has any advice they can give me it would be very welcome. Many thanks

It's not as clear cut as either of the examples in your post suggest.

It may be that you can complete the PIP Going Out activity reliably and on the majority of days with the help of your dog and conversely you might not be able to even with the help that your dog provides. What have you put on the PIP2?

If you have a hearing dog, then you are going to be assessed as using it whether you take it with you or not to the assessment, so if it easier for you to get there with it, then I would take it.

Sorry I didn't continue this topic but I'd done so much reading about PIP I thought my brain would fry.
I'd like to share my assessment and decision experience as it may help someone in a similar situation.
I took my Hearing Dog and my partner with me to the assessment. There was also a speech to text translator as I had requested. The assessment lasted an hour and a half and was gruelling.
I was awarded standard rate for daily living, having been given 8 points for Communicating.
I was awarded no other points which surprised me as I thought I should get something for Engaging With Others at least, as this is not something I can do without my partner. The assessor stated on the report that I could engage with other people unaided which seems ludicrous as I relied completely on the speech to text translation.
I also hoped I may receive something for Planning and Following a journey based on the fact I only go to familiar places, always take my Hearing Dog and would not consider going without him.
The Government website guidelines on PIP state:

We recognise that guide, hearing and dual sensory dogs are not ‘aids’ but have attempted to ensure that the descriptors capture the additional barriers and costs of needing such a dog where they are required to enable claimants to follow a route safely. Activity 11 therefore explicitly refers to the use of an ‘assistance dog’. Assistance dogs are defined as dogs trained to help people with sensory impairments.

I therefore thought I may get points for Activity 11, Planning and following a Journey, descriptor D. Cannot follow the route of an unfamiliar journey without another person, assistance dog or orientation aid.

I have yet to decide whether to put in a Mandatory Consideration. I think maybe I should pursue it but have found the whole DLA to PIP process so stressful that I may just gratefully accept what I have been given
Many thanks to you Gordon and your wonderful website and for all your invaluable help. I used all your guides and templates to help me but I think the template letter for recording which I used to request a speech to text translator was essential to my partly successful claim.

Based on what you have posted I would have expected you to have met.

c. Needs social support to be able to engage with other people. 4 points.

The extra 4 points giving you the 12 needed for an Enhanced award.

Do an internet search for CPIP/1534/2016 and CPIP/2559/2015 which are relevant Case Law on this.

For the mobility, you need to show that you cannot "reliably" and "on the majority of days"

d. Cannot follow the route of an unfamiliar journey without another person, assistance dog or orientation aid. 10 points.

This would give you the Standard rate, if you have no problems going to a familiar place, then your would only get the Enhanced rate by also scoring for Moving Around.

Thanks Gordon. I'll take a look at this case law tomorrow as you've confirmed what I suspected.

Hi.....following this post with interest as I too have hearing loss but have been awarded only 2 points for communication with others as i have a hearing aid only and no points for "follow route of unfamiliar journey without another person" despite detailing my safety fears and stress of attempting it alone due to my significant hearing loss, in combination with fears of becoming unwell due to another condition meaning I haven't done so for some 3 years.

Have posted my own query on PIP and hearing loss but no moderator has yet offered any advice?!? Would welcome help as plan to appeal. Thanks.
