I claimed ESA on 1st August last year and was sent the questionnaire to complete but have heard nothing since. My GP/CPN have not been approached for information but last week I received a letter saying my contribution based ESA would stop after the 52 weeks. I still haven't been assessed! Any idea what might be happening? Thanks.

The payment of ESA(CB) is limited to 365 days if the claimant is not in the Support Group, this includes the initial assessment period.
After the 365 days you may be eligible for Income Related ESA. ESA(IR) is dependant on your household income, your savings and assets, and any hours that your partner works. See
Asset rule for ESA(IR)
24 hour work rule for ESA(IR)
I would chase Maximus for an update on your assessment.

If it isn't likely to be soon then contact the DWP, they can prioritise your assessment.
You may need to contact your MP for assistance.

The DWP created a huge backlog in the system during 2014 and some areas are still suffering the after effects.
It's up to you whether you chase them or not, but if you are not eligible for ESA(CB) then your payments will stop as you have been advised.
