DLA TO PIP was created by f c
Hi thankfully I'm asking for someone else this time. My mum who is elderly has just had the letter through for my sister to transfer from DLA to Pip. My mum looks after my sister who is 52 and all her life or as far as I can remember has been on DLA. She was born with learning difficulties and cannot look after herself. I don't think years ago they gave a diagnosis then, but she does look slightly Downs Syndrome. She has just come through breast cancer and has now been left with lymphedema, and cannot use her left arm due to having lymph nodes removed. She has got medical evidence to back this up, how ever has no medical evidence to show her learning difficulties and the fact she cannot look after herself or go out by herself. Will this be a problem not having the evidence? Any advice would be appreciated thankyou.

I would have expected there to have been evidence from when she was initially awarded DLA, childhood DLA claims can be very difficult without supporting evidence.

Has your mother spoken to your sister's GP, they can look back through the records for information and I would have thought that they would have an opinion on the matter.

I think you will struggle to show cognitive impairment without supporting evidence.

Hi Gordon, I know my mum doesn't have any evidence from when she was awarded DLA. Such a long time ago. She spoke to the GP about it today, as she asked would she do a letter in support of a home visit as my sister has problems walking and also as my mum is elderly and not in the best of health herself, she will struggle to get to an assessment centre. The GP refused as said they have stopped doing them. But she did say that if my sister got turned down she would "fight tooth and nail for them" to make sure she gets it. I suppose then we should just try and fill the form in as best we can. Probably down to me again! and see what happens. Is this all we can do?

Do GP's really have no idea of the mental distress that a failed or only partially successful claim causes? All of which might be avoided if they had actually got involved in the assessment from the beginning.

Yes, if you do not have evidence then you/she will need to explain in detail how she is limited by her learning problems.

My thoughts exactly Gordon!! And especially as the GP knows them both very well and knows what they have just gone through with my sisters cancer. O well will follow your guides again and see what happens. Thankyou.
