PIP appointment was created by Julie
Hi all, I received my appointment yesterday for my PIP assessment.... as you'd expect I'm really aprehensive, worried and all of the usual. I've had relapsing remitting MS for over 20 years and have found all of the banal type questions asked during these assessments incredulous... I've spent all of the past 20 or so years doing my level best not to have to talk about MS unless absolutely necessary. I am finding now, that having to closely examin every thing I can and can't do is exhausting, I've mostly become accustomed to the can't do's and scarcely remember most of them, as I've devised work arounds., but it seems the can't dos are an important part of the impending assessment.
Can anyone advise me on what I can realistically expect ? Any advice would be really appreciated ...
Thank you x

There's a section at the back of the PIP Claim guide that covers the assessment and the questions you are likely to be asked.

I think the best advice is, they are not your friend they really are the enemy. If you can't do something, say it as it is. Always bear in mind your worst episodes, remember them, keep them in your head, don't look on the bright side of life, don't try to please. Think always each day as you try to do things, am i pushing myself, then stop and then write it down. I made the mistake of guessing how long I could walk for, time yourself at your own pace. Wish I could count the number of mistakes I think I made. There will be no good days if they win. Good luck, mine goes in the post tomorrow for a mandatory reconsideration. Wish I had known about this site sooner, and had more knowledge of how things work.

Hi Julie
Anyone with long term conditions find ways of managing to live from day to day. Having to pick away at how you manage can be very difficult. When I had to do this for my own claim, I was lucky that I had a good friend who I could talk to. I used him as a base line and went through each question and asked what help, or assisstance he would need if he were me. This dialogue brought us closer together as friends with a better understanding of each other but also helped me to understand myself and my needs better, it reminded me of all the ways of coping that I use on a daily basis. If you don't have a friend or family member that you are comfortable with, in the past I have used an Imaginary friend to work out what help they would need in my position. For me this made it easier as I was building up a case from scratch rather than breaking down my life. I wish you well for the best future you can have
