How quick do you get ESA payment after claiming?

Hi Harry,

Please will you keep all questions and/or comments relating to ESA in one place? We ask members to do this as it helps us enormously. You will find the topic easily in future if you bookmark/favourite it on your web browser now. Alternatively you can click on your username (in blue when you are logged into the forum) and it will bring up a list of all your previous messages.

The assessment rate payments usually start fairly promptly, I would expect them to be in your account within a week or two of you initiating the claim.

You can find the current benefit rates on this link

If you are on low income, you might be entitled to a means-tested top-up. Income Support is only available in a few circumstances - these include receiving Carer's Allowance or being the parent of a very young child.

Gordon has already explained about free prescriptions in one of your other topics.

When I have time, I will merge all your ESA questions into one topic. Please use this topic for all your future questions or comments about ESA :)

Medical evidence will always help with a claim and a letter from a Consultant will usually carry more weight than a GP, however, it does depend on the content, a letter from your GP that directly addresses the ESA activities will have more effect than one from a Consultant that just talks about your conditions in general terms.

Evidence supports your statements in the ESA and gives them context.

What happens if somebody is sick for a short period of time say 6 weeks or so, what are they meant to claim then? Do they claim ESA? As the person would probably be better before any medical date was given?

It depends on whether you are currently working and entitled to SSP? If not then you can claim ESA, a significant number of claims are closed before the assessment because the claimant got better.

How often is a person allowed to do this? If they are sick 2 or 3 times a year for 6 weeks etc?

That's an interesting question! I can't find any advise that deals with this specific scenario.

On the assumption that you close the claim and no Decision is made by the DWP, then as far as I can see you would be able to make a new claim immediately. If it is within 12 weeks of the previous claim then the two will link, so if you were claiming Contribution Based ESA then the 365 day rule would apply.
