New ESA 50 02.17 form was created by Philippa C
Hi! I have just discovered there is a new version of the ESA 50 form dated 02.17. When I completed the ESA50 form 2 years ago I filled in both the physical and mental health sections despite only suffering from a physical illness (I have severe ME and do not have significant cognitive problems although the exhaustion prevents me from doing much mental activity - I cannot even watch tv). The new forms are different from the 04.15 forms. They say we should only complete the mental health section if we have a diagnosed mental health disorder such as schizophrenia or a learning disability. I don't want to annoy the DWP by filling in this section if I am not supposed to, nor do I want to give the impression that my illness is mental and risk them ignoring my physical problems. In view of the changes to the new forms, do you think it's best to leave the mental health section blank in my situation.

The law has not changed in regard to ESA. The changes to the form are cosmetic.
You can complete what sections that you want, but you won't score points for the Mental Health section unless the problems that you have are related to a mental health condition .
It's not uncommon for ME sufferers to also have depression, if this is a diagnosed condition then it would allow you to answer questions 11-17, although you would still need to separate the effects of your conditions so that their is no confusion.
