Unannounced visits for PIP recipients was created by fighterpilot
Hi all, my friend has just told me that with PIP comes a new stress. Apparently if you're in receipt of PIP, the powers that be will make unannounced impromptu visits to your home. No notice, no letter just a surprise visit. I'm astounded, but not surprised by the government's underhand treatment of the disabled. Has anyone heard about this?

I'm afraid I think this quite unlikely, what would be the point? PIP is not means tested so whether you have an income or savings is not relevant, the DWP have no medically trained staff so they cannot carry out any level of assessment on your limitations and their staff have no right of access to your property so you can just refuse entry.

The bottom-line is that why would they waste employee time on what would seem to be a fruitless exercise.

Exactly, don't let them in. You don't know who they are or if they're scammers going to rob you. Sounds like it wouldn't happen so I would assume these visitors are not legit anyway.

They waste plenty of time and money on appeals, with 2/3 of appeals for ESA and PIP winning in the last three months; it wouldn't surprise me if they were doing this. The DWP even sent someone to my latest tribunal to recommend that I be awarded Mobility, even though they said I should only get 4 points in the original decision and MR. What a shambles!

Don't know how relevent this is but there is ath=read on the Rightsnet Discussion forum on "Random PIP Checks" see here

I suspect that they will write to you first before turning up because as Gordon says you dont need to answer the door for un announced visits and many would therefore be a wate of time and money but the DWp at times seem to be a law unto there self ( or seem carry out the editorial ideals of some Newspapers) .

Given that FOI requests have shown DWP admitting supplying newspapers such as the Daily Mail with materials to publish, it may be the other way round.
