Can I claim? - slipped disks was created by TinoMc
Hello everybody

Im new here, just registered, looking forward to talking to some like minded friends.

Do you think I can I claim PIP for my slipped disks, heres how it panned out:

• Had back pain all my adult life, never needed help until now.
• Prolapsed L4/L5 - L5/S1 in 2013
• Had MRI
• MRI Confirmed both disks narrowed and desiccated indenting the thecal sac - pain
• Put on medication : Gabbapentin, Amatryptaline ( and a host of others which didnt agree with me)

The effects of this are excruciating sciatica and lower back pain, which leaves me bed ridden.

Its random how often I end up in bed but on average it bulges 4-6 times a year and I end up in bed for approx 4-14 days.

When im in bed i cant do anything, it really is bad I cant move much & if I do its torture, my wife has to do everything - meals - toilet (helps me on commode next to bed).

When its not bad I can get by without help.

My wife is not able to help me anymore so I need help, im worried sick waiting for the next wave as I dont have the finances to pay a carer to help me.

Do you think PIP cover this non permanent condition?

Many thanks for any replies

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

PIP has very specific criteria that you will need to show that you meet, have a read of our PIP Claim guide for more information. See

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip

The most obvious issue from your post is whether you can show that you are affected on the majority of days, the guide covers this under fluctuating conditions,

If you have further questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Is there any way you can have an operation?

Apart from when you are confined to bed do you have problems walking at the other times to a degree that would give vou an award for one of the mobility

Basicaly if you cannot walk more than 50meters in a reasonable time (defined as a walking speed more than half the average pace for a person without disability) about two and a half minutes for 50 m(for standard mobility) or just over a minute for 20m (enhanced mobility) You must also be able to do it reliably and repeat it within a reasonable tim. ,and also without Pain and Severe Discomfort.

As you are worried about you or your wife being able to cope during the periods when confined to bed it may be worthwhile requesting a Disability Assessment for you, and a Carers Assessment for your wife, by your local Social Services which may result in some care provision although as you are probably aware Socia lCare is stretched to the limit at the maoment.

When your discs leak fluid the discs flatten & the muscles supporting become weaker hence the slippage, mine slipped out & because they were flattened they were brittle around the edge & the edge snapped off. The broken bits went under my broken disc & into the central nervous system channel in the spine, this moved down to my left leg & has left me with permanent nerve damage. I have foot drop, I cannot wee properly & knee & hip feel like they are being torn off. I had to learn how to walk again, still am.

Honestly , do not leave it to late as I did , I suffered with my discs for 20yrs +
Physio did not help me at all.
Good Luck & be careful, you think you have pain now , I hope you get it sorted soon.
