New PIP Legislation was created by janeb
I am in the middle of my switchover from DLA high rate Mobility and lower rate care indefinite award and have filled in my PIP claim form and will have an assessment tomorrow. I have severe mobility issues and wondered about the walking criteria. I can walk short distances but only with pain and walking aids (sticks, crutches and wheelchair/mobility scooter) I have been told that if I walk into the centre I have to attend using my crutches that I will be assessed as being able to walk more than 20metres and won't get the higher rate PIP for mobility. Is that true?

I have moved your post to it's own topic, we ask members not to post their questions in other's topics especially when they are about a different area of benefit.
It's not necessarily the case that you would be found to be able to walk more than 20m, but the crutches are an acceptable aid to help a claimant walk.
To be honest it will depend on what you have written in your PIP2. you need to have explained why you cannot reliably walk more than 20m on the majority of days.

Thank you for your reply and sorry I posted in the wrong place, it was my first post in the forum and I wasn't quite sure what to do.
I wrote in my PIP form that I can't walk reliably more than 20 metres which is the case. I have pain almost all the time from a condition I have had since birth ( I've had several surgeries and have life long problems as a result of this) My GP wrote an excellent summary of my health issues and I included quite a few letters from specialists I have seen too.
When you say that crutches are an acceptable aid to help a claimant walk - do you mean that it still means I can meet the criteria (in principle) for the higher rate mobility? I am sorry to go on but I am very anxious about this ( I know everyone is) I feel very worried about the whole experience.

The Moving Around activity is primarily about the distance, the use of aids is assumed in most of the Descriptors so the crutches neither help nor hinder.
You say you said that you cannot reliably walk more than 20m, did you expand on why you can't do this reliably?

Hi, can i ask how you are getting on with your changeover to PIP from DLA. Im in a very very similar situation to you and about to send in my PIP form early next week.
