Looking for some advice/guidance with an application for PIP for my 21yr old son & his mental health situation. I have the form almost completed but my concern is lack of diagnose & treatment. To give a brief summary he has had problems for many years with depression, anxiety & self harm.

As a young teen the GP said he would grow out of it, but of course he didn't. Many visits later he was finally referred to mental health services where he got a few counselling sessions but, against our wishes, never saw an actual doctor. Discharged, he got worse. Many calls were made to the GP to come see him at home as we couldn't get him to go to doctors & were always told no & if he gets worse to call the police. We said he's ill, not a criminal.

Eventually a spokeswoman from a voluntary organisation spoke to GP insisting he be referred again to MH Services. Months later, again few sessions with a counsellor. We begged for a doctor & proper assessment, refused. Discharged as being fine. He wasn't.
Months later my son took himself to GP asking for referral, it was refused. I phoned GP explained how bad he was but he refused, no referral. My son then tried to kill himself. He was stitched up (no pun intended) discharged & saw no one from MH.

Took him back to GP insisted on referral. Got referral but then my son worsened had to be taken to A&E & saw the Crisis team, they agreed (with parents) he had serious mental health problems & needs to see a Consultant. We took him home. Phoned to ask about his appointment & told it was down as routine, I said it needs urgent. Back to GP got them to request urgent. Following week had call, apparently a triage nurse at the booking centre decided to down grade it back to routine, without any consultation ! And on it goes.........

I need to send this form off this week & I am concerned about having no diagnose, no treatment plan, no medication, haven't even got an appointment yet (that is an ongoing work in progress ! ) All that is through no fault of my son but will it stand against him ?
As a fit, healthy mature adult I have been bought to the brink of despair with not only the lack of help but the positive obstructions that have been placed before us, it's shocking (or maybe not) Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

If you need more time then ring the PIP Helpline and you should be able to request a two week extension to the time to return the form.

I'll be honest and say that the lack of an official diagnosis is not going to help his claim although the recent trips to A&E may help to offset this. Your GP should have received reports about this so you should contact your GP Surgery for copies.

Although your son obviously has serious problems at the moment, PIP does not look directly at these but rather the effects that they have on his ability to complete the PIP activities so have you being using our PIP Claim guide to help you complete the form?
