Questions about filling in PIP form was created by Alice10
Hi, I have a couple of questions.

1.My condition varies. I'm using the B&W Guide and it says with regard to variability of your condition: "Try to give your best estimate of how many days, on average, different needs apply. You can do this using the number of days in a week you are affected, the number of weeks in a month, the number of months in a year or whatever fits best with your condition. It will then be for the decision maker to work out how this fits into percentages over a 12 month period."

With DLA, under each question you had to say how many days a week you had difficulty with the activity. With PIP it doesn't ask you this so I presume you have to say how often you are affected in the Extra Information box?

With PIP I think you have to meet the descriptor for more than 50% of the time to be awarded points. So rather than say '8 months in a year', can I just say 'over 50% of the time' for each question? Or would that not be accurate enough?

2. I use my DLA money to pay for treatment that my doctor agrees is the best treatment for me but that the NHS do not provide. Would it be worth mentioning this, or would it be wiser not to mention it?

Thanks.

It is really important that you forget about DLA, PIP does everything differently.

You can just say "over 50% of the time" but I really don't advise it, 51% is over 50% of the time but I would expect someone who reported this to struggle to score points, you need to address the issue of credibility.

Also 51% does not necessarily equate to the majority of days which is the legal test, to show 4 out of seven days you need to be affected 58% of the time!

If you provide the time you are affected in Extra Information then it is divorced from the activities that it applies to. For some activities you maybe affected all of the time for others it might only be 80%.

You say your conditions vary, what does this mean? How are you when you are at your worst, what about when you are at your best, what is the average? When are you affected and for how long?

I'm afraid there are no short cuts. :(

Thank you, that's helpful advice. I will put the times I'm affected for each activity in the Extra Information box after each question.

Do you have any advice for my second question about paying for treatment please?

The difficulty with paid treatment is whether it is necessary for your conditions or not, do you have any documentation from your NHS doctors that recommends it or not.

Receiving treatment is usually an indication that the claimant has unresolved issues with their conditions, so on balance it is usually a good thing to include.

Thanks again for your advice. I will try and find the letter confirming that this is the treatment I've been recommended and include it with my form.
