Hello

I recently completed my PIP review form and sent comprehensive medical evidence and prescription list. Unfortunately I had to tick the box to say things have got worse since last claim. I have recently been diagnosed with cataracts and my vision is very poor which affects my ability to do things. I already have hearing loss, tinnitus and complex mental health problems. My mental health has got worse now I as I feel very vulnerable. I have no-one to go with me to F2F except my wife. She knows how things affect me day by day as she is living with me everyday. However as she has only just received PIP for one year she is worried she would end up being reassessed at the interview!

I wanted to ask if it is not a good idea for her to accompany me? I also wanted to ask if I lost some or all of my PIP what would be the effect on ESA as my wife receives couples rate of ESA for us both.

I also applied for a war pension but was refused. I didn't bother appalling as I didn't know if having a war pension would affect the ESA.

One final thing and I apologise for asking a few questions on the same thread. I am 63 and not sure if I will get Pension credit or not. If I did get them automatically will these be deducted from ESA?

Thanks in advance

If it is you reassessment then the only person that the assessor will be interested in talking to will be you, so she should not worry.

I would always recommend that you have someone with you at the assessment if it is at all possible.

If you lost your PIP, in particular the Daily Living component then she might lose or have reduced any Premiums she is receiving with her ESA, for example the couples rate Enhanced Disability Premium might be reduced to the single rate and any Severe Disability Premium could be removed.

You should be able to claim Pension Credit if a woman born on the same date as you has reached State Retirement Age, you can use the following, just remember to select female.

www.gov.uk/state-pension-age

If you claim PC then your wife may have to give up part or all of her ESA as only one person in a couple can claim an Income Related benefit, so I would get face to face advice before making any decisions.

Hello Gordon

I have got into a mess because of my mental health difficulties. The letter for my PIP review said I needed to get authorisation for a taxi and I have sight and hearing loss so had to ring up. ATOS were questioning why I needed a taxi and I explained and said I needed a home visit or paper based assessment. They said I couldn't have a paper based assessment due to not enough evidence. I had supplied a lot of up to date evidence, but these are medical reports so they are mainly diagnosis and symptoms. I also filled in the form explaining how my difficulties affect me.

The next I knew they told me they had cancelled my appointment and would have to contact my GP to see why I needed a home visit. I am now worried that if they say no I will be waiting not knowing when I am going to be seen or where it could be somewhere I cannot get to. I hadn't asked them to cancel the appointment I had just enquired about the possibility of a home visit. I asked them to reinstate it but they wouldn't now I worried my file will be returned to DWP. I'm so scared I struggle on the phone talking to people or dealing with people full stop. Now I am shaking with panic an fear of the unknown. What have I done?

From what you have posted they have cancelled your first appointment so you are still entitled to a second one, you will have to wait for this so that they can contact your GP for them to confirm that you need a home assessment or a taxi to their offices.
