My question should probably have stated paper assessment followed by a telephone call.
With regards to my "poorly worded"reference to telephone assessments I was referring to the following paragraph in your guide.

"assessments
Because of the massive backlog of PIP assessments, Atos and Capita are attempting to speed up the process by just looking at the paper evidence about some claimants and following this up with a telephone call to the claimant to fill in any gaps where necessary.
This call may come before, or after, you have been given a date for a face-to-face assessment.
In some cases, the result of the telephone call will be that you will still be called in for a face-to-face because the health professional decides that is the only way to get sufficient information.
In others, the papers and the phone call will be deemed sufficient for a recommendation to be made about which PIP descriptors apply."

When PIP was introduced the option of carrying out a telephone assessment was available and we did see a number of members who went through this, it was not to their advantage.

We have not seen a phone assessment done for several years, although it is not uncommon for assessors to phone claimants for additional information before they carry out either a face to face assessment or decide a paper one is required.

Just to update you with a BIG THANKYOU !!!! From us both.

Received enhanced level of PIP both mobility and living, up from standard rate. We could not of done this without your guides help and support.

We also had a lot of support from our MP as the first F2F appointment he arranged the assessor did not turn up and reported we were not in; however my Mother was sitting by the glass front door with the dog and no one ever turned up.

A second F2F home assessment was arranged via my MP and they arrived half an hour late; but she scored us higher level so is forgiven.

One tip that we got elsewhere and may help others we typed all of our answers on word, one answer per page and just wrote on the form a basic answer e.g. back problems affect ability to cook and see additional sheets for further info and examples. The assessor found the typed sheets far easier to read than poor handwriting and it allowed various people the option to edit.
