claiming PIP

claiming PIP was created by Gina
Hi, I recently was placed in the support group for ESA. I followed the guidelines on this site for the form filling so I'm grateful for that. I also had to have a medical...so just filling out the form took me several weeks and was stressful, the medical was stressful, but at least I got in the support group. Now I'm wondering if it would be wise to also apply for the lower rate mobility PIP. The reason I hesitate is that I have the idea, maybe paranoid or maybe I read it here somewhere, that applying for PIP when on ESA can backfire because if they turn you down for PIP that might affect your ESA claim. That is if the PIP assessment disagreed with the ESA assessment you already have you might end up jeopardising your ESA. Is this paranoia on my part or is there any truth in it ? I did apply for PIP years ago and was turned down and also I know there's going to be stress involved in applying for PIP so I don't want to go ahead if I risk jeopardising what I have.

I hope that makes some kind of sense.

We haven't seen an ESA award directly affected by a failed PIP claim so I would not worry too much about this possibility.

That said, the criteria for PIP and ESA are quite different even where they overlap, so an ESA SG award does not mean that you would meet the criteria for a PIP one.

I would start by having a read of our PIP Claim guide, this explains the assessment criteria in depth. Be conservative in marking yourself as those assessing you will almost certainly do so.
