TOPIC: voluntary work and IB

voluntary work and IB 6 years 10 months ago #14651

I am looking at the rules about mixing voluntary work and IB.I am of course been bombarded by leaflets offering me chances to discuss and develop work opportunities. I have just looked at a disability alliance factsheet on work for people who are sick and disabled.

These are my Q's;

1. under 'other allowed work' it states 'an approved work trial arranged in writing with an employer by the DWP ....for which you will recieve no wages'.

How is this different (or not) from voluntary work? How does this work trial get set up?

2.DLA 'there are no restrictions place on the work you do, providing you satisfy the DLA rules. You should inform the disability benefits unit if you start work..'......it also says there is no limit on how many hours you can do voluntary work.

But...What counts as voluntary work, is it only work thats done for a specific organisational purpose? There are various sorts of help groups, community organisations, that might engage with people are these counted?

I am writing articles about the politics of health which may get published. Should I be telling the DWP about this? I do not get any money, but its not for an organisation either. I dont wish to have to tell them as its my personal work for ...me.
Any advice welcome.

Kate

Hi Kate,

If you download a copy of our factsheet, 'Caution it may not count as voluntary work' from the members area, it should answer your questions.

Good luck,

Steve
