TOPIC: Work Focused Interview for claiming Income Support

Work Focused Interview for claiming Income Support 6 years 10 months ago #14990

Hi,

Just had a letter off the DWP saying that i could be called in for a Work Focused Interview because i have made a claim for Income Support. Is this correct?.

I had a benefits checkup done by my union and it seems as though i am entitled to IS as i meet the criteria, but am apprehensive about being interviewed.

Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can be called for a work focused interview when making a claim for IS.

As it would appear to be a new IS claim, this can now only be claimed by certain lone parents and carers. Income based ESA replaced IS on the grounds of illness/disability from 27 October 2008.

Hi,

Thank's for that crazydiamond, and yes you are correct it is a new claim. Could i ask though would it be possible to get a home visit?.

The reason why i ask this is due to personal circumstances i cannot get out of the house.

Thank you for your fast reply...

Hi,
I had the same experience. I claimed IS in October as my partner, who supported me, left, and I now live alone. My claim was turned down as I'm in receipt of IB (which apparently makes me wealthy!) Despite not getting IS I have still had to attend a WFI.
I tried to fight my corner but eventually attended as they threatened to stop benefits altogether. At the interview I was 'deferred' as I was extremely stressed and not fit to interview.
My claim for IS and mortgage help was declined for 39 weeks (9 months, end of May!), not 13, as I'm on IB. So, I'm currently living on my credit card... getting deeper into trouble (and mental illness) as I can't pay the household bills and make ends meet on £96 a week.
I don't qualify for education/training course concessions, prescriptions, legal aid or any of that sort of thing on IB.... I'm stuffed!
The Gov website mentions not having to wait 39 weeks if you are deemed to be 'vunerable'. How do they judge 'vunerable'?

Hi haveihadmydinner,

That's disgusting so sorry to hear of your unfortunate brush with the DWP.

I too am on IB and think i am now regretting claiming IS, hopefully some words of assurance will come regarding waiving my interview or conducting it at home.

Take care

Hi,

Normally one would attend a Benefits Medical Centre for the medical to be carried out. It is possible to obtain a home visit, albeit you normally need a very good reason for this.

You would need to speak with the office which has sent out your medical appointment to try to arrange a home visit.

Pete
