IB/IS Permitted Work Rules was created by Lymie
Hi there, I'm on IB with an IS top up due to living alone and being in receipt of DLA. I've been looking into the income variants of doing a few hours work a week in the near(ish) future.

My local Pathways to Work advisor mentioned that as I was in receip of all the above prior to the changes in October 2008 then I should be able to earn up to £93 per week without it affecting my IS at all.

I've searched the web but such information is tough to find. I have found information pertaining to the Permitted Work Rules prior to October 2008 but they suggest that I am liable to lose my IS £ for £ after the £20 disregard as under the current rules.

Can anyone provide me with a link to the right web page for proof please? I'm trying to get the same from the Pathways advisor but not got it yet.

It would be great if I can earn a bit extra money without loss of any benefits. If I don't lose any IS I then won't lose anything off my HB/CTB of course. I could use this money to save up for a car for when I can do more hours as I may need to travel out of the village to do that.

Hi I was in same postion last year, and when i looked into permitted work with a vocational worker. The £93 wouldnt go towards HB but it does effect IS after the £20 lower permitted earnings disregard they claw it back. So you would lose IS along with other passported benefits of IS

I think you may be right about your IS being reduced £1 for £1 after the £20 disregard.
I read it somewhere yesterday but cannot remember where it was, as I would provide you with a link somewhere.

Might be worth a trip to your local CAB to see if you can get any answers at all?

I am not 100% sure but I think your advisor is wrong, the £90 figure I think relates to losing all the benefit and that may include ESA as well. I believe they will start deducting money as soon as you earn over £20 @ 96p for every £ earned or £1 for every £1 earned but over the £90 mark they have told you I believe they will withdraw your ESA and class you as working.

I would go by what you have read in black & white and not what an advisor has said as they will deny it when you start to lose money below the amount they tell you.
Maybe to avoid losing any money you could do volunteer work for a few hours a week

Many thanks for the replies. I am aware of the current rules which would mean losing £ for £ after te £20 disregard. I was seeking any knowledge of the rules prior to October 2008 which may well be slightly different.

Dean, I am not in receipt of ESA and my question is not relevant to ESA rules at this time.

I appreciate your comment in red which is another reason I came to this forum to see if anyone has the evidence I need. I know my advisor has had sight of the rules he quoted to me and am trying to get a link to the relevant web page from him.

I am not daft enough to try and argue a point without proof.
