I really appreciate all of the help people are offering thank you.

sorry I was not clear on my initial post - my dad was placed in the work group and we feel he should be in the support group.

he was assessed at the medical assessment as

cannot see well enough to read 16 ....... = 15 points

at least once a month loses control of bladder ... = 6 points

steve thank you - the 'exceptional circumstances' do apply. i had over looked these as I assumed they would be to do with terminal illness

How many points does he have to score to get placed in the Support Group? as I thought with the above he would have been.

Better still, if this is a case in which ESA was totally refused, as well as preparing for an appeal, get your MP to write a letter asking the DWP to see sense
and to expeditiously put the matter correct . You should not have to wait months for a hearing to correct this mess.
On occasion the portcullis headed paper of the House of Commons has an eye opening effect on the recipients

Hi Sharon

if you look at the DWP's A - Z of Medical Conditions
and look up blindness and diabetis, it should help. It's actually written for DLA, but it fully explains the limitations of both conditions.

Also see this factsheet Employment and support allowance - the medical tests

Hope this helps. As it's now 5 years since I retired as WRO, I have to admit I know little about ESA, as it only replaced IB for new claimants in November 2008. I tend to use our members guides and links for ESA rather than give incorrect information.

These days I tend to specialise in DLA claims and appeals.

Good luck.

Jim
