Drectgov/Benefits Adviser result?? was created by mikmeg
I am sure some on here have used the benfits adviser at some point.
I have now on 4 occasions tried it in last few weeks with similar results give or take a few pounds.
The problems now arising ,My wife asked for a form to get carers allowance. She then went to CAB with every scrap of information we have. She was told that I would lose the £53 that she would get. But they said I had too speak to Inacp.Ben to get a breakdown first. They told me I was wasting my time and their time as I would lose the money she would get.And so it went on. No department knows what the other will do,and now the care alloance dept.are phoning to get a go ahead asap of yes or no.
It all seems a gamble for losses, and bears semblence to the Benefits advisers results that we could be upwards of £100 better off by their calcs. (I do also get HRC DLA)
Any body know if there is a magic source who can say what or who is correct? As CAB are unsure as well.
I am just confused and feel it wil get more so when the changes start to unfold for everyone on benefits.

Does your wife receive any social security benefits, if so then she may be falling into the trap of 'overlapping benefits'.

For example, if your wife was in receipt of IB/ESA, she couldn't be paid Carers Allowance as well, as they're Overlapping Benefits

If you had been living alone you might have been getting something called a severe disability premium as income support on top of your incapacity benefit, which you would then lose if someone else claimed carer's allowance, but assuming your wife is over 18 and lives with you, you won't be getting this premium, so you can't lose it.

That's the only explanation I can think of.

I don't guarantee that's the explanation of the discrepancy in your case, but if you check with the CAB how they were calculating your benefits, you could see whether they'd accidentally assumed you were getting the severe disability premium.

Hi Jima 1,
The only benefit in her name is the child benefit for our kids. That was advice many years ago by the then DSS was when I got the old INVALIDITY,and then DLA she was just as is.There is nothing attached to her except the amount within the Incapacity that I am waiting to hear from in a breakdown of this benefit.

Hi Mike,

To be honest I have found the 'Direct Gov benefits adviser' site of little use as it can only deal with the easiest of straightforward things. It cannot cover all personal situations, or situations complicated by other benefits or situations.

In reality its use is of limited value and results cannot be relied upon.
