If it happens to you and you're not happy about it, just tell the judge and ask if you can have the hearing in private. I'd be surprised if the judge didn't agree to your request, since there are lots of tribunals for an observer to choose from, although as I understand it, it's entirely at his discretion.

i had no idea this was the case, im quite surprised, how manny people are we talking, i suffer from axiety aswell as a physical disability, i dont think i could handle having members of the public in the room while i go into great detail about my personal life and how i have difficulty using the toilet etc. my axiety is so bad i would prefer a written appeal evern tho i know my chances would be much slimmer :(

Don't worry - you're not going to get a whole gallery of people. Mostly if someone is observing, it's because they're training to be an adviser/advocate and want to see what happens before they start helping clients to go through it, so they won't be shocked and they will keep it all confidential.

As you can see from this, you might get someone who is expecting to go through an appeal themselves and wants to know what it will be like, so they'll be sympathetic because they're also going to have to go into their personal details when it's their turn.

You're not likely to simply get passers-by off the street and I can't for the life of me see a journalist being there unless you're a celebrity. It's not like a juicy murder trial - think how boring it would be for someone not involved in this sort of thing.
