Hi,

Just found out that my wife has been awarded CA.

No letter, just a payment in to the bank, then confirmed by a telephone call by me.

The call handler confirmed that there would be an adjustment in my ESA, but that I would get the Carers Premium of £36.60.

Do I need to inform the ESA/Job Cent, or will that be done automatically by DWP, as I recieved a payment this week.

Also, do I need to apply for the Carers Premium independently or will that be done by DWP/Job Cent?

Regards

The Carers Unit are actually very good at their jobs and I would expect them to contact the ESA department about her claim, but this does not remove the requirement for you to contact the ESA team yourself.

You don't need to apply for the Carers Premium, it should be added automatically.

Hi Gordon,

I have just telephoned the Job Centre+ (ESA)(IR) to advise them of my change of circumstances i.e. wife awarded 'Carers Allowance'

I fully expected them to tell me that my wife's CA would cancel out my ESA, and that I would be eligible for the Carers Premium of £34.60.

I was on the phone for nearly 45 minutes as they said they would work it all out now, and tell me exactly what my position was and if there was to be any changes, overpayment etc.

I was surprised when they told me that there would be no change, and that I would continue to receive the full ESA payment.

He said he had checked with the his supervisor and he confirmed that because I was on Income Based, and that it was my wife getting the CA that they would continue paying me the same ESA payment and my wife would get the full CA???

I asked him if this was a definite decision and he said it was confirmed and 100% correct as he had double checked before giving me that decision.

I'm thinking now if they have made a mistake, or has something changed?

Can you shed any light on it?

I am afraid that they are wrong, this would only be correct if you were receiving Contribution Based ESA and had no entitlement to Income Related ESA.

Quite why they felt the need to work it out when it is not their job to do so and are unlikely to have received any training for doing so, I don't know!

Have they registered on your records that your wife is receiving CA?

Gordon,

My bad, I gave you duff information.

I am actually receiving 'contribution based' ESA and on the Support Group.

Have been on this since 2014 (I may have been on IB initially)

I have telephoned them again, and spoken to the local JC+, and they both say my ESA will be unaffected.

They have definitely registered my wife as receiving CA.

I apologise for confusing the issue, does it sound right to you now?

Its only until my 65th in July when its all change anyway.

Regards
