Attended the assessment and took someone with me. When they took out a notebook to take notes they were told they couldn't do so.

You were misinformed. The claimant has every right to take written notes of the assessment.

I know but the assessor simply refused to allow it and I didn't take anything with me to show them I knew we had the right to do it. Perhaps it would be a good idea to warn people this might happen so they can take something with them starting that it's allowed?
