Secret list of forced labour companies and charities finally published

After a four year battle, the DWP have been forced to publish the names of 534 organisations which used forced claimant labour up until January 2012.

After a hugely expensive legal fight by the DWP to try to keep the names secret, they were finally forced to reveal them by the Court of Appeal last week.

Claimants may be particularly disappointed by the number of charities featured on the list.

These include: Age Concern; Age UK; Care & Repair; Citizen Advice Bureau; Help the Aged; MIND; RNID; Salvation Army.

Big businesses include: Boots; Cash Convertors; DHL: Matalan; Morrisons; Pound Stretcher; Sainsburys; Superdrug; Tesco; WH Smith; Wilkinsons.

Mandatory Work Activity, the scheme involved, forced JSA claimants to work full-time in return for their benefits. It was announced in November of last year that the scheme was to end.

However, what is not known is which organisations joined after January 2012 and so do not appear on this list. We also don’t know how many of the companies involved continued to take part even after increased publicity made it very clear that claimants were forced to take part. Some, such as Tescos and Age UK, claim they pulled out after the scheme received very negative publicity.

Claimants are now waiting to see if the new Work and Health programme, which will replace the Work Programme and for which the DWP is currently inviting expressions of interest, will also include mandatory work.

Family Action in Swaffham also took part in this scheme despite the members of the so called "Steering Group" (mainly service users and volunteers) being completely against any involvement with the DWP. They only pulled out when they realised that the amount of paperwork/quart erly reviews etc they had to do took up too much of the 2 project coordinators time for too little return. I.e, they were doing too much work for not enough money in return for "helping" people forced to work for their paltry benefits.

I complained to Oxfam about what I had read here and I shall show you their response.

Dear Anthony

Thank you for getting in touch.

Oxfam has never supported or willingly participated in Workfare or any other government Mandatory Work Activity Scheme. We actively opposed these policies as they undermine people's belief in the enormous value of genuine voluntary work. These schemes unfairly affected the support people received, and so are incompatible with our goal of reducing poverty.

A small number of Oxfam bookstores unwittingly took on people referred from one of the Government’s work schemes, but this was because our staff were not made aware that the volunteers being placed were on a scheme. In those instances we acted swiftly to stop the placement."

Please do let me know if you require any further details in this regard. I will be happy to provide you with all the information you require.

Once again, thank you for getting in touch and for your on-going support!

I've got a friend who was getting JSA, and about three years ago he was forced by the Job Centre to lug enormous boxes around in a warehouse in Camden for three weeks in the run up to Christmas as part of this scheme, for no pay, he didn't even know the name of the company he was doing this for,mit wasn't a charity. They did not thank him at any stage, nor offer any reward whatsoever, not even a reference, even though he did everything he was told to and turned up on time every day. He was told that his JSA would be cut off if he didn't do it, and he was already living in poverty. It makes me want to cry.

+4 #3 Porthole Pete 2016-08-02 16:58
Yup! That's the best way to treat them, hit em in the pocket. Surprising to see whose on the list. Not surprised at tesco however. I sacked them off many moons ago for all their underhand tactics
+5 #2 Eli48 2016-08-02 11:19
I did the same and cancelled my RNIB one too. I am going to find an alternative to Tesco, if I can.
+6 #1 TonyR 2016-08-01 18:19
I thought Oxfam were above that sort of thing.
I have just cancelled my Direct Debit to them which has been running for nearly 31 years.
I am disgusted.
