TOPIC: Becoming a student after being on I.B.?

Becoming a student after being on I.B.? 8 years 3 months ago #14859

I have M.E and am on Incapacity Benefit. My condition has been improving slowly, but steadily for the last year. I am still quite unwell and will need a lot of support and understanding from my Uni, but I believe if my condition continues to improve I might be able to study full time at university this September. Luckily, it's just a short bus ride away.

There is a lot of advice on going back to work after being on IB, but I haven't been able to find any advice on becoming a student. Has anyone done this? How does the transition work? I know I won't be entitled to any benefits once I start a course. Is it ok to keep claiming until I am sure that I am well enough to do the course?

Nothing is definite yet and it is all very dependent on my condition improving a lot more. When do you think I should inform the DWP of my intentions?

Also a major concern for me is, what if I start the course and have a relapse and am unable to continue? I have been recieving NI credits because I was under 20 when I first claimed IB, therefore I haven't paid enough NI contributions to be eligible if I had to re-apply (I am over 20 now).

I have to admit thst I am trying to rush myself off benefits after having to go through the appeals process the last time my benefit was renewed. Although successful in my appeal, I never want to go through that again. I actually get a surge of fear every time a brown letter comes through the letterbox. I know this is ridiculous, especially since some days I cannot even make it all the way to the letterbox! So I am trying to ignore this fear and make my decision purely based on my health, but it certainly is a big motivator.

I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give me.

Thanks in advance!

You may find some of these factsheets helpful. www.skill.org.uk/page.aspx?c=14&p=147

Some students manage to continue getting IB whilst studying, if they can show that although they can study, they aren't fit for work. I don't know how easy this is.

Skill has a telephone helpline.
