ESA & NI Contributions was created by Confidential
Hello
I would appreciate any feedback regarding my situation please.
I am writing this for my husband as he is unable to perform computer work.
He is 54yrs old and has had to retire on health grounds. He fortunately receives a pension. This pension means he is not entitled to the £ aspect of the ESA benefit as it cancels it out over the £85 rule.
My question regards NI Contributions.
He is 5 years short of full NI Contributions.
Have been advised that he can make Voluntary Contributions to make up the difference. But can I make an application through ESA to see if there is a possible benifit where NI Contributions are paid.
If so is it the same application paperwork protocol to complete (ESA50)
Has anyone had any experience/knowledge of this?
Thank you in anticipation.

The pension is stopping payment but it does not mean that he cannot be eligible for ESA as a NI Credits only award.

Did he make a claim for ESA or did he hold off because he thought he would not be paid?

The only other benefit that pays NI Credits that would not be effected by his pension would be Carers Allowance or the Carers Credit, assuming he can fulfil the requirement of providing 35 hours of care a week to an eligible caree.

Hello Gordon
Thank you for your reply.
He retired last year. As said we were aware his pension would stop payment so we didnt apply at all, but a few weeks ago a friend mentioned NI Contributions.
We have now received the ESA50 form to complete.
Am I right in thinking you have to complete this ESA50 form to apply for NI Credits? It seems a very complex form to complete for this to let alone the payment side.

He needs to complete the form but will likely also need to attend an assessment and receive an award of ESA, to continue to receive NI Credits. This will be reassessed on a regular basis.
