I shall be inheriting some money after the loss of my father. Does anyone know the upper limit for savings/cash for contribution based ESA ?

Hi A,

I am sorry to hear of your loss !! :(

If you are in receipt of Contribution Based (CB) ESA only, with no Income Related (IR) ESA top-ups, there is no limit to any capital, assets or savings that you may have or inherit.

However, even though your inheritance will have no adverse effect of your CB ESA payments, I would still inform the DWP in writing, giving details.

Sending Documents to the DWP or ATOS

Hi bro58

Thanks for your speedy reply !

I'm actually in receipt of Income-based ESA support group but I'm pretty sure that, in due course, my savings will be in excess of £16,000. I believe at that time that my housing benefit will also end. But I shall inform the DWP of my new savings once I have them.

May I take this opportunity to thank all the moderators for all the help that you offer to people like me. I'd be lost without you !

Kind regards, Alison

The Support Group is neither Contribution nor Income Based it is the type of ESA that you are receiving that determines this. :)

You may be receiving;

- Contribution Based ESA solely
- ESA(CB) with an Income Related ESA top-up
- ESA(IR) solely

You need to understand which of these options fit with your payments as each is affected in a different way by your savings.

If it is

- ESA(CB) only then there will be no impact on your benefit

- ESA(CB) with an ESA(IR) top up then your ESA(IR) payments will cease if your savings exceed £16,000 but your ESA(CB) will be unaffected.

- ESA(IR) only then your payments will cease if you exceed £16,000, your claim will remain active and you will continue to receive NI Credits which count towards a full State Pension, if your savings reduce so that they are under the limit again, then you should notify the DWP and your ESA(IR) will go back into payment, although the figure may be reduced.

Gordon in your reply to Alison you stated that it's not the support group but the type of Esa that determines the rules re income etc., can you explain further as Im on Sda and I thought when I get called and I was put in the Esa Wrag I will be on cont time limit for a year, but if put I support group cont I would not be timed limited nor would i be asked to fill out these compliance forms about my income eft.? I would not get esa
if it is income related as my husband works .

ESA is a single benefit with two sets of eligibility criteria.

For Contribution Based ESA you qualify due to your NI Contribution history, claimants receiving SDA are considered to have met this criteria and will be transferred to ESA(CB).

For Income Related ESA you qualify due to low household income and savings.

It is also possible to receive ESA(CB) with an ESA(IR) top-up.

There are two groups for ESA the WRAG and the Support Group, neither group determines the type of ESA you receive, you can receive ESA(CB) and/or ESA(IR) and be in the WRAG and you can be receiving ESA(CB) and/or ESA(IR) and be in the Support Group.

However, if you are receiving ESA(CB) and you are placed in the WRAG then your payments are limited to 365 days, this restriction does not apply to the Support Group. See

12 Month Limit for ESA(CB)
