DLA to PIP - 16th birthday? was created by buster21
Hi mods and all, and a belated Happy New Year to you all. Quick question:

My son will be turning 16 in July. He currently gets DLA - awarded until Jan 2018 due to a life-long health condition.

I am his appointee.

When can we expect to hear from the DWP in terms of his "invitation"?

Is it likely to be before his 16th birthday or after?

As an aside, when do you think it's likely to hear from the DWP regarding an appointee - if one is still needed or not? Which is still is incidentally.

Many thanks

Buster

I would expect both to looked at when he reaches 16.

Neither can be looked at until he reaches 16.

Hello moderators and all

My son has been invited to claim PIP on reaching 16. I have been appointed as his DWP appointee.

We are now starting to gather evidence for his claim and I am embarking on another couple of months or so at trying to get my head round PIP regulations, at least, enough so I can fill the forms in for him and maximise his chances of him getting what he should be entitled to.

My query is: amongst other disabilities, he suffers from a visual impairment and degenerative condition called Rode-Cone Dystrophy. He is going blind and is registered as sight impaired. He has a loss of peripheral vision and can not see at all in dim light or when it is dark.

Am I right in thinking that in terms of the Mobility component to satisfy the descriptors, one only needs to be affected (cannot carry out the activity) for a part of the day and not for the majority of the day, and this would have to be the case for the majority of days?

For example, he cannot carry out the descriptors after darkness falls without help and this is the case every day. Many thanks.

Please make use of the current PIP Claim guide, PIP is very different from DLA.

Claimants must be unable to reliably complete a PIP activity on the majority of days.

It is possible to be classed as being unable to reliably complete an activity for the whole day if the claimant is unable to do it at some part of the day, but it depends on the context of the activity.

So as an example; someone who suffers severs pain in the morning while they wait for their pain killers to be effective could successfully argue that they cannot wash and bathe, as this is an activity that reasonably could be expected to be completed first thing in the day, however, it may not be accepted that they could not prepare a meal, as this would be an activity that could be completed later in the day, after their pain was under control.

So you will need to explain his sight problems in detail and not just during hors of darkness.

Hi Gordon and all,

just to say a big thank you to you and everyone else at Benefits and Work. I used your PIP guides when applying for my son's PIP. Today I have found out that he has been awarded PIP at the rates we were hoping for and for an ongoing period.

Amazingly, from posting the PIP2 form to being awarded after a paper based assessment it took a total of just 23 days for the decision to be made.

Once again thank you very much for all your advice offered on this forum and via your very informative guides.

Good look to everyone else in their dealings with the DWP, especially, any parents or carers out there of special needs kids going through the PIP transfer process.

Keep up the good work.
