Does this involve planning a journey or just doing it?

The latter.

Sorry, when it is stated 'cannot follow the route of a familiar journey without
another person, an assistance dog or an orientation aid' any idea how far this is accepted for, e.g. bottom of the road or local shop etc?

There is no prescribe distance or complexity, but the route must require the claimant to navigate it, in other words make decisions about what they do next at any point in the journey, so I would say it is more that the bottom of the road. Depending on where the shops are, this would probably be a good example.
