Minimum age to claim ESA? was created by Workedup
Hi all,

I was told today by someone who made a claim for ESA that the advisor on the phone asked him if he was over 18.

Hr told them he was and the advisor said that's alright then... he asked why and the advisor told him that it used to be 16, and a new change has come into force now where the claimant has to be over 18.

Is this true, please? I cannot see anything on thr government website.

Thanks.

I'm not aware of any changes that increase the minimum age for claiming ESA, there have been changes to Housing Benefit which is often claimed at the same time, perhaps that was what they were referring to.

Afternoon Gordon,

Thank you for your reply. It was definately the minimum age to claim ESA that was said by the advisor - from 16 to 18.

I have looked at the ESA section of the .gov website. There is no mention of minimum age, but there is a mention of 'you have to be over 18', in the 'Hardship' payments section with the ESA page.
