Home Assessment was created by Daveo
Hi there, My wife who has orthostatic tremor is due a home assessment for DLA to PIP next week (Thursday). I assume the home assessment is due to her difficulty standing for more than 10 seconds, either aided or unaided and her difficulties sitting in most chairs. To be honest we are both rather scared! We have seen the horror stories and the recent TV coverage.
May I ask:-
How much authority do these assessors have in my home?
Can I record the assessment? After all, surely my house, my rules!
I can provide a copy for them, do they have the authority to say no?
Can they look / poke around?
If I can’t record, can I take notes (at my speed) and can I ask them to read back what they have said before they leave?
My wife fears every question I ask may prejudice the outcome.
I realise from our local advice that home assessments are rare as they have no experience but they did recommend we record it with or without permission.
Thanks for the brilliant site. Kind regards Daveo

You can record the assessment but you need permission to do so from the Assessment Provider. You will need to be able to make two simultaneous recording to either tape of CD, you cannot make a digital recording. Two cassette recorders would be sufficient.

You can make a covert recording without permission, but if the assessor becomes aware that you are doing this then they can curtail the assessment and class your wife as failing to participate, so think carefully before you do this.

The assessor is a guest in your home and has no more authority than any other person visiting you.

You can take notes but the assessor is not going to wait for you to keep up and you cannot insist that they do.

There's a section at the back of the PIP Claim guide that covers the assessment and the questions your wife is likely to be asked.

Thanks for your advice, the home assessment was awful resulting in 0 points for mobility.
On reconsideration it was changed to 12, so the situation is fine now.
Your PIP document is superb, it equalises the “playing field” somewhat.
Thankyou for your hard work, it shows that some people still care.
