Can I accept a cash gift without losing ESA was created by hellsbells59
This is a very unexpected situation to be in and one that I'm very grateful for as I live on benefits and a very small pension. I'm being offered a substantial cash gift from my sister to help me upgrade my home to support my growing mobility needs which would include a new bathroom and other updates, some of which aren't mobility related. Also, to provide me with a new wheelchair and other supports etc. However, the predicament I have is that I don't want to accept her gift if it's going to lift me out of the benefit system.

I am currently on the higher rate for both elements of DLA - yet to be transferred to PIP, with luck, which wouldn't be affected by this money. I am on the Contribution element of ESA only as when I was medically retired I received a very small pension which was enough to take me off the IR element of ESA. I know that my occupational pension counts as income but not sure a cash gift would as it's not a regular income and I can't find anywhere online that tells me this?

Does anyone here have any knowledge of this area as I'd rather not accept the money than lose my ESA as when the money is spent then I'd have to start the process of reapplying for ESA again in a couple of years.....I really couldn't cope with that!! The money isn't worth it.

How bad is that when you consider turning down money for fear of having to go through the process of applying for ESA again?! I live in fear of this benefit system all the time and I'm dreading the next round of PIP that awaits me.....

That's for another time.....so in the meantime, if anyone can help me out here, I'd really appreciate that.

Thanks in advance for *any* help given.

I have to tell you that we cannot give detailed financial advice on the forum, you need to get face to face advice from a trained advisor.

If you are only receiving ESA(CB) then it is not affected by any non pension income nor any saving that you have.

Neither DLA nor PIP is means tested.

You can also avoid issues by having your sister pay vendors directly so you never have control of the money.

Your response is very much appreciated Gordon.

I will make a face to face appointment but I feel relieved at your response, so thank you for that.
