Reflex anoxic seizure was created by Karen
Hi, my daughter suffers from reflex anoxic seizures and has had them since she was 4 months old. We receive middle rate care and low rate mobility as she needs constant supervision Incase of a seizure. They occur if she has a sudden shock, e.g. Loud noise, car horn, bath too hot or cold, if she hurts herself , if she is ill, stressed or anxious which she is always anxious about having a seizure so a bit of a viscious circle! She has just turned 16 and will have to claim pip, im worried how to help her fill in the form. As the seizures come without warning it is dangerous for her to cook, if she cut or burnt herself that would lead to a seizure which would result in even worse injury or even fire. She wets herself during a seizure and falls unconscious for a couple of hours so I have to undress and wash her and put her to bed after a seizure, would toilet needs apply to her? She is escorted round school and can only go out when supervised by someone who knows how to deal with the seizures. She has bitted her tongue whilst eating and had a seizure and almost choked, could she get points for that. She is getting very anxious about filling in this form, it is so much to put on a 16 year old, any advice much appreciated x

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

If your daughter does not have specific problems with completing the PIP activities then you can still argue a requirement for supervision, the "Safety and Supervision" section in the PIP Claim guide explains this in more detail.

If you have further questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Hi there - I know someone in a similar situation (different seizure type but still requires constant supervision due to the severity and number of the seizures). They scored points for preparing food (stress the need for constant supervision), taking nutrition (again supervision due to risk of choking etc) and bathing (due to risk of fall/danger in bath if had a seizure). They managed to get points for these 3 areas plus something for taking medication as well - so got standard rate. Also for mobility planning and following a journey - needs supervision at all times due to risk of falls, unable to cross roads, could have a seizure at any time during a journey and need all the assistance you describe so they got higher rate for this. It would probably help if you put some letter in from school about the care plan for her to be supervised all times.

They did not get anything for toilet needs as the person can use toilet except when having a seizure. But I guess its worth a try.
