SMI query was created by plankgirl
Hi all,
I wonder if you can clarify something for me ...
I have got a letter stating how much mortgage interest I will get, as I do each year. I have just noticed that it states that this amount is taken from my ESA. I didn't realise this before.
My query is - if / when the SMI turns to a loan next year, and I do not claim it, will my ESA payment increase by the amount they currently deduct ?
Also, if I was paying rent, would any housing benefit be taken from ESA payments ? Seems a bit unfair to me ...
Hope you can help me as I am trying to work out what to do when SMI payments change ( I do not want to pay interest on interest that's for sure)
Kind regards

It's not deducted from the money that you receive, they actually increase your applicable amount by the same amount so their is no net change, the same would apply for HB, so if you stopped the SMI there would be no change to the ESA that you actually receive.

Thanks. It's not clear from what they say in letter, but now I know for sure.
Do you know if the changes to SMI are still definitely going to happen in April 2018 ?

It's difficult to be sure of anything given the current political situation but the change is still targeted for April 2018.
