DWP help with filling in PIP form...?

Hello all :)
(Never been here before so hopefully I'm not repeating something that has been covered by others previously).
Just received my PIP form, am being transferred from DLA (a thirty year constant claim which started with invalidity benefit, then DLA then ESA for a short time WRAG and now PIP , also I have just become a pensioner).....and was advised this morning in a meeting of local CAB that I can have someone from the DWP? come round to my place to help me fill in the form. I said yes, but with the option of cancelling -because I am very worried that I shan't be helped to get PIP, indeed quite the reverse.
I can fill in the form without help physically and have downloaded a copy of your help "the best possible PIP claim info ( thanks!) so I don't know what to do, should I just do this myself? Or should I accept help?
Any advice please?

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

It's a decision that only you can make.

We know that some members have made use of this DWP service, not many and we have no feedback as to how the claims went.

I can also tell you that most members complete the forms themselves. That may be because they could not find assistance and I would say that a not insignificant proportion struggle because of difficulties in expressing how their conditions affect them but also due to the stress of having to do the work in the first place.

I would ask what experience this person has in doing the work and what their success rate is.

You should also have a good read of the PIP Claim guide, first to see whether you think you could manage the task but also to make sure that if you do opt for someone to do it for you that you can make some level of decision as to how well they are representing your problems.

The bottom line is that this is your claim and only profit or lose by it, so you must take ownership of the process and be happy with what is submitted.

Thanks for the reply Gordon...

Have changed my name now

I honestly don't know what to do :(.. I went to the CAB because I was feeling so lost.. and a young woman tried to convince me I needed their help... that is: a person from the DWP to help me.. when I protested that why would someone from the DWP help me...? she said that's what their job is.....(?) Then she rang me the next day to ask if I'd made up my mind about the assessor coming round.. I was flustered and agreed but now I feel really unsure again... I've had 30 years of this and I don't trust anyone anymore.....The DWP contacted me twice by letter this week to say they have lost all my records.... My GP was frankly unhelpful.. I'm at a new practice due to a recent move of address and the GP said I can only write what I see in your records, I don't know you.. but the records are missing I tell her. Then after a day I ring up the surgery again and ask if the GP would be willing to write a letter at least saying she had seen me? She agreed but charged me 15 pounds. No wonder people kill themselves.

The most important thing is that you complete the claim form. If you cannot do this on your own then any help that allows you to should be considered, even if it is the DWP.

If you don't return the form then your claim may be closed and it will not help you if it is only partially completed.

Have you tried contacting any charities that specialise in your conditions for help?

Dear Pon,
AGE UK filled in my form for me: specially trained advisor: they can also easily arrange an extension to the time. The lady was kind & understanding & knew what to say. She pointed out difficulties I have which I take for granted & understate. They can help with appeals too.
Do try looking at the guide a section at a time, 1 a day? Photocopy a rough copy of the form to practise on & use extra sheets.
Get further medical evidence: GP & Consultant letter- you may need to pay for these, but worth it.
Good luck. Susie

CAB also have a guide to completing the form on their website , i was advised they could help me complete it in person too but it wasn't organised very well at our local office as wouldn't book appointments & they don't always have someone available. i lost confidence in them when a lady briefly went through checklist and would've lost me points if i accepted that & hadn't already read benefits & work guide, grateful she wasn't one to guide me through.

The AGE UK offer service at home and also may find some local disability charities have advisors to help, which is where MIND directed me to.
