Hi, could you please help me, sadly I lost my wife a couple of weeks ago due to Cancer. I am on Income related ESA and I was told to put in a claim for Bereavement Support Payment, well today I got a letter saying I can have the Standard rate which is a lump sum of £2,500 and 18 monthly payments of £100. My question is because I am on Income related ESA will this extra money be stopped..
Thank you for any help or advice you can offer me.

I terribly sorry for your loss.

I'm afraid that BSP can have an effect on ESA(IR), I would speak to the CAB about it, you will need to contact the DWP office dealing with your ESA claim.

hi red
i sadly went through the same situation 3 years ago . I applied same as you and got the lunp sum. i then received a letter from dwp saying that as i was in receipt of esa contribution based i could not have weekly bereavement amount because this was not allowed by law and as my esa was more than bereavement amount they would continue to pay me esa.
I did then have some trouble with my housing benefit because they said that as i was in receipt of both esa and weekly bereavement allowance my housing benefit would be stopped but it all got sorted out in the end and my housing benefit was reinstated after about a month.

regards Tango

Hi Tango, thank you for your input on this. I don't know if it's because I am Income related ESA and also they have recently made some changes to the Bereavement Support Payments.
I contacted McMillon and spoke to a Benefit Adviser, they checked 3 different sources to find out this is a Disregarded Income so they assured me my normal payments wont be changed due to this, to make sure I phoned up the DWP and they also in the end told me the same that it is now a Disregarded Income, I asked them to make sure they got a note on there computer of them telling me all of this because I don't want to have to pay everything back if it's a mistake. I'm sorry Tango you had to go though what you did and thank you for your message, Gordon thank you also. Regards Graham.

I'm going by the Gov UK page

www.gov.uk/bereavement-payment/further-information

note it says "can" not "will".
