Hi
I'm new to this site but have read so many great reviews on how people have been helped.
My situation is that both my wife and I are on ESA. We separated 3 years ago owing to a breakdown in our marriage of over 20 years, an amalgamation of her physical disability and my worsening mental disability. We are both in our 50's and had active working lives up until the last 5 years. However, over the last year or so our relationship has developed again as we have learnt to deal with each other's conditions and are planning on moving in with each other again. Our biggest concern is, will we have to redo our ESA claims as new claims or will the DWP just amend our current claims? I have learnt through this ESA period of my life how the DWP trip you up when you're trying to be honest and seem to have a scant regard for ill health and that by actually trying to do the right thing you can be massively penalised. My wife is in the ESA support group and I have recently been put into the work related group (I don't agree with this) and also now had my severe disablement payment cut. My wife lives in our daughter's house but obviously can't claim housing benefit as she rents from a family member. We both receive PIP. Any advice on how to approach this would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

Your primary issue will be dependant on the type of ESA that you both receive!

If you are both only receiving Contribution Based ESA then your claims will not be affected.

If one of you is receiving Income Related ESA in part or in whole, then the other will be added to their claim. The ESA(IR) will be increased but your net payments will be less.

If you are both receiving ESA(IR), then one of you will have to close their claim and be added to the others.

Try putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators to see what you might receive.
