HI all, I'm new to the forum.

Does anyone have experience of doing permitted work on ESA. I have anxiety and depression from having a breakdown in 2007, it's been a long and slow path with some major setbacks. I have just been offered some part time work by a friend of 12 hours a week .I'd like to give it a go but I'm nervous that if I do it and declare it they will push me off ESA and I'm not ready, I'm still having relapses and have travel phobias. Please could anyone give me advise? Many thanks

Lots of people do Permitted Work but there are issues that you need to consider.

There are limits to the hours that you can work and the amount that you can earn, exceeding these will result in your ESA claim being closed.

You also need to consider whether doing the PW is at odds with your stated limitations for ESA.

You must contact the DWP before starting the PW to confirm that they are happy for you to do the work.

There's a guide to PW in the ESA section.

Thank you for your advise Gordon, I was worried that they would see it as at odds with my claim. My anxiety and depression issues are complex though.Because the person is a friend and the business is a local independent I wouldn't have to travel a great distance or be around strangers in a busy work environment, also the hours would be flexible so if I was having a bad day I could do flexi time. What if I said it was for less hours and make the wage per hour more?
Is there anywhere that I could get free impartial advise on the complexities of this matter. It's a horrible trap as I want to feel like I'm getting back to a place of work ,I used to be self employed so this would be a huge step down in terms of my experience, but how do you do that without trying?
really appreciate yours or anyone's further advise on this. Many thanks

Apart from being at or above Minimum Wage, there are no problems with your hourly wage, it is the number of hours a week and your weekly pay that are considered.

We don't have many members who are doing PW but hopefully any that are online will comment.

Hi Gordon,

I was about to make a post about freelance work whilst in SG, but thought I'd comment here instead.

What would be the limitations for freelance work whilst in SG, for instance writing online? Would this not be an option for myself?

Can't seem to find details about this in the above context.

Thanks.

The rules are the same, have a look at the guide in the ESA section
